From family fun to charter services, this cool cat can do it all

The Leopard 51 PC is one the best-selling powercats of all time in its size range, according to the yard from Cape Town. Its successor, the Leopard 53 PC, has excellent DNA from which to draw, and the things that were so well loved in the previous model have been further elevated in this new boat. It’s all about shared experiences without compromising on ‘me time’

With 3 cabins available, there’re enough overnight accommodations for a mid-sized family or a group of friends. The owner’s stateroom occupies the entire starboard hull and features an island double berth. There’s a head with double sinks here too, and a separate shower that is surprisingly large. Both the other staterooms are located in the port hull, and they each also have an island double berth, as well as an en suite head with a separate shower.

To have island double berths in every room, AND en suite heads with separate showers in a yacht of 50 feet is only possible in the realm of catamarans. These rooms aren’t small either. There are hanging lockers in all of them, and the master features a loveseat for quiet reading moments.

One of the best changes made on the 53 PC is to move her front bulkhead forward, which eliminated the cockpit that was in the 51 PC. This created a huge salon and galley area, and also enlarged the acreage of the flybridge. This design choice is inspired, and the expansive salon is easily filled with light from every angle due to the generous use of windows. Fore of the salon are the sunpads, and aft you’ll find another open social area that is shaded by the flying bridge above.

Moving up to the cockpit in the flybridge is easy via stairs aft of the main salon, and here the best space on the yacht is found. There’s a dining table, chaise, and forward-facing seats here, as well as a cooking station too.

These spaces can bring people together for shared experiences, but as there are so many on the yacht, one can recharge and unwind in secluded privacy as well.

Boldly go further than you’ve gone before

Running a pair of Yanmar diesels that makes 370 hp each, the 53 PC can go far. We’re talking about country-hopping distances here. Official specs put her top speed at 22 knots, and recommended economical cruising at 17.5 knots. At cruising speed, she’ll go 463 nautical miles. To put that into perspective, Port of Penang to Port of Phuket is just 283 nautical miles. The 53 PC can make the trip in about 16 hours at this speed.

However, with only one engine running at 6.8 knots, the 53 PC can go for 1995 nautical miles. That’s just shy of the 2197 nautical miles from Port of Penang to Humen Port in Hong Kong. There are ample stops for sight-seeing and makan along the way. Just imagine taking a week or two off, and simply experiencing fresh new cultures every few days at your own pace. What an experience that would be.

Catamarans are perfect boats for exquisite charter experiences

With all that has been said above, the 53 PC is inherently talented as a charter boat. What’s more, she has a motorised swim platform with mounts for a tender. Of course, other watersport toys can be held here too until needed. The most difficult part of heading off to a few secluded, remote beaches may just be syncing calendars with your mates.

A boat that also has chartering in mind requires easy maintenance points. Skippers can walk around the engines for regular inspection, and access fuel-water separators, plumbing, thru-hull fittings, bilge pumps, and also the hydraulics for the steering to keep the cat in optimum operating conditions.
